(The scene changes where a boy named Jesse is begging for money around the streets.)
Jesse: Excuse me. (walks up to a woman) My mom dropped me off on her way to work and she forgot to give me a bus fare. Could I borrow some money? (The woman gives Jesse money) Thanks, lady! You have a good day.
(Another street boy named Perry attempts to beg money from a man.)
Perry: I've really got to get home, man. You'd think just lend me a buck...
Man: (dismissively) Get out of here.
Jesse: Excuse me, lady, excuse me. My friends and I are having fun so we've spent all of our money at the Natural History Museum. We have to take the ferry home. Think you'd help me out?
Woman: I suppose. (gives him money)
(Jesse and his friends look at the money.)
Jesse: Few bucks.
Perry: (disappointed) Shoot. I'm hungry.
Jesse: Gosh, man. I need some food.
(Outside of a restaurant Jesse and the street kids wait for the customers to leave.)
Perry: (softly) Come on.
Jesse: Let's go.
(Jesse and the street kids take some food while the people stare at them.)
Perry: Let's go, Jess!
(Jesse and the street kids run off with the stolen food and an angry waiter runs out.)
Waiter: Hey! Hey, you kids! Come back here!
(We cut to the scene in the neighborhood where a woman comes out from the catering building.)
(Perry laughs as Jesse takes the cake from the catering van.)
Perry: Cool.
Jesse: Yeah! Come on, guys.
(Then scene changes where Jesse and the other street kids eat the cake at skateboard park)
Gwenie: You know the first time I've ever went there, it was so bad. My mom dropped me off and went to work into Houston.I never saw her again. I don't care. I hate her anyway. You know, I could eat one of those everyday.
Jesse: Yeah, well I bolted.
Vector: Oh, you bolted from Cooperton?
Jesse: I did, bonehead.
Vector: Yeah, right.
Perry: Shut up. We both did. What do you know?
Gwenie: I know they're gonna watch you like like they're gonna stick a knife in their back. I had to wait until some stupid foster home losers took me. And, then i slipped.
Perry: Maybe you ain't as smart as us.
Vector: Oh, eat it.
Perry: I am.
Jesse: I just want my own place like an apartment or something.
Perry: Yeah, right. You and me, man. We'll hook up with someone. With my brains and my wonderful personality, we'll be rich.
(Jesse throws some cake at Perry. Vector laughs with Perry. Just then, a police car arrive as the siren wails.)
Jesse: Get out of here. Go! Go!
(Jesse and the street kids run from the police cars.)
Meeting the Greenwoods/Cleaning the graffiti edit
(The scene changes where a social worker named Dwight is furiously lecturing Jesse while escorting him to his desk.)
Dwight: Breaking and entering, malicious mischief, vandalism, resisting arrest. Anything else happened that I should know about?
Jesse: Yeah, I robbed a few banks. Is that a problem?
Dwight: Yeah, i'm glad you were only out there three days, son. Sit down.
Jesse: (sarcastically, sits down) Ah, did you miss me, Dwight?
Dwight: So, was Perry with you on this number?
Jesse: Perry who?
Dwight: (sternly) Look, don't play. Don't come in here being a bonehead. Now, I hate telephones... and I spent 45 minutes on a conference call with the police department and that adventure park trying to keep you clean, son. You know what? You were lucky this time. I kept your little behind out of court. You have to clean up the mess you've made at Northwest Adventure Park. (Jesse groans) Ah-ah-ah! That is your probation. You got a problem with that?
Jesse: Yeah, why should I have to clean it?
Dwight: You know, I don't know why do I fool around with you kids in the first place. You know, I don't know why I am working so much overtime with you. But you split out again here, and I am out of the picture. Gone! You'll be with Youth Authority. Court supervised and controlled. They'll put you in baby jail. That means a lockup in juvenile hall, son. (Jesse was just silent) Okay, look. Your placement is still on. The Greenwoods are okay, they don't even care about this incident.
Jesse: What's wrong with them?
Dwight: Oh, I see. Because they want you in their home. There's got to be something wrong with them, right?
Jesse: What do you think?
Dwight: I think on that paper, you're still real young, so you got some chances. Not an infinite number of chances, but a few. A few, son. You get it? (gets up and sits on his desk's chair) Okay, you got any questions about any of this?
Jesse: You hear from my mom?
Dwight: You still want me to hear from your mom?
Jesse: I just want to know if she's okay.
Dwight: Nobody's heard from you mom in six years, Jesse. (Jesse reacts in disappointment)
