When Ash first met Alex after he broke out of the zoo in New York and got transferred, him and his friends thought he was wild and vicious due to his giant teeth. When everyone fell overboard and ended up on the island of Madagascar however, Ash started to understand Alex more and realized that he wasn’t such a bad lion. Upon seeing how much he missed New York and how he tried so hard to return to the zoo, he walked over to him and attempted to befriend him by offering him some raw fish he’d caught. Alex, touched by Ash's kindness, became fast friends with him as Ash was the first human to ever come in contact with him and not be afraid. In the next several hours however, Alex's hunger got the best of him and started acting wild. This inadvertently scared his old and new friends. When Littlefoot, Ash, and Marty attempted to snap Alex out of his wild state they were attacked by fossa. Alex, remembering the kindness Ash gave him on the night they first met, overcame his wild state and saved everyone from the fossa. With that Ash, Littlefoot, and the gang decided to help Alex return to New York by plane.

But as they were halfway across the world, the plane's engines went haywire, and the plane crash-landed in Africa where Alex meets up with his long-lost parents. Seeing how happy Alex was with his parents, Ash began questioning if returning him and his friends to New York would bring them happiness or not. After seeing Alex being tricked by Makunga into humiliating himself at the right of passage ceremony and later banished from the pride, he was outraged. Sooner or later, the watering hole dried up due to the crazy old woman leading a group of lost tourists to build a dam. Ash went with Alex and Marty to go unclog the dam so they could get their water back, but unfortunately Alex ended up getting captured in the process. Marty and Ash ran back to get help from Melman, Gloria, Littlefoot, Scooby-Doo, and the gang. After fixing the plane Ash and the group came and saved Alex and his father Zuba from the crazy old woman, destroyed the dam, brought the water back, and banished Makunga from the reserve. As Alex and his friends happily danced away with Zuba and Florrie, Ash began to believe that they were better off living free in Africa rather than going back to the zoo in New York.

Ash later reunited with Alex and the gang on the circus train when they were being chased by Chantal DuBois. He became very suspicious as to why Alex and his friends were in Europe when they should’ve been in Africa with Zuba and Florrie. Alex lied to him by saying that they were on vacation, and they thought they could travel Europe before heading back to Africa. After he inadvertently spilled the beans when he said that the train was a ticket back to New York however, Ash was angered at his deception and knew it was another one of his selfish schemes to go back to New York. Although Alex was confused at first, Ash decided to give him a choice to where his true happy home is: the zoo or the circus. Ash then left with a warning that if Alex truly cared about Gia and the circus, him and his friends must tell them the truth for it's not fair to them nor him and his team. Ash remained angry with Alex throughout the entire process of renovating the circus, even after performing a spectacular performance in London. When Chantal DuBois arrived and exposed Alex's secret to the circus, Ash, Littlefoot, Mickey, Ttark, and the gang accused Alex of calling everyone stupid and naïve idiots for falling for someone's dishonesty. As the circus animals left, Littlefoot, Ash, Ttark, and everyone else expressed their disappointment in Alex's dishonest actions. Alex had not only broken the trust in his old and new friends, but in the girl, he fell in love with. As a result of his selfish actions Ash and his gang turned their backs on Alex and his friends, but not before smasing Alex’s snowglobe he’d gotten as a souviner from the zoo as a symbol of their anger towards him. Upon arriving in New York, Alex and the gang realized that the zoo was not as great as they thought it was. With that, Alex came to realize what Ash had been trying to tell him and his friends all along: they were free when they weren’t in the zoo. Alex also realized that because of his and his friend’s selfish desire to return to captivity, they took their freedom for granted. They then saw that when they were with Zuba and Florrie in Africa and with Gia and the circus animals, they were already home. Alex decided to go back and tell Ash, Littlefoot and the circus that they were wrong about the zoo being their permanent home. Before he could however, him and his friends were ambushed and captured by DuBois and her men. Julien managed to escape and showed the circus animals, Ash, and Ash’s friends what had happened. At first Ash didn't want to help them and stayed behind, but thanks to the words of encouragement from Stefano, Gia, Vitaly, and Skipper, Ash returned to the zoo and helped in the rescue by announcing to the crowd DuBois's true nature. Things get out of hand when Stefano ended up getting into serious trouble as DuBois captured him. Ash ran over and attempted to help him, but DuBois stabbed him in the thigh and threw him in the penguin habitat full of cobras. Ash called out to Marty to help him, but Marty told Ash that Alex was on his way to get him and to hold on a little longer. Just as Marty said, Alex grabbed Ash before the cobras could bite him and got him to safety before finishing off DuBois. After defeating DuBois, Alex and his friends begged for Ash's forgiveness, and promised to never take advantage of other people's trust nor take their freedom for granted ever again. With the combination of Alex saving his life, his apology for his selfishness, and his decision to live with the circus instead of the zoo, Ash happily forgave them and his friendship with Alex was restored for the better.

In Pooh's Adventures of Turning Red while battling Panda Ming, Pikachu gets hit and Alex saves it as Ash thanks him.
