Ash forms a brotherly bond with Richard while him and his friends helped him get over his fears. Ash felt sorry for Richard since he was afraid of everything, and he told Richard that it's okay to be scared occasionally. When Richard first met Ash's Pikachu, he nervously asked Ash if he bites, and Ash assured Richard that he's harmless. Richard quickly warmed up to Ash's Pikachu and took a liking to him. Ash defended Richard from the kids who picked on him, Mr. Hyde, a white whale, Long John Silver and his pirate crew, and a dragon. Richard felt amazed upon seeing Ash's Pikachu shocking Long John Silver's pirate crew. In the end, Ash praised Richard for his bravery. When they got home from their adventure Ash agreed to let his Pikachu sleep with Richard in the treehouse, along with Misty's Togepi.
