Near the end of the film, Ash saw that Melody made friends with a wild Squirtle as it defended her from Morgana and teamed up with her to help defeat the sea witch in the process. Seeing that they make an excellent team together like he does with Pikachu, he warmly gives Melody an empty Poké Ball and allows her to ask Squirtle if it wants to stay with her and her parents. Squirtle responds by joyfully jumping right into the Poké Ball. Once Squirtle was captured, Ash declares that it is her first captured Pokémon, and she'll consider it a gift for putting Morgana's plans to an end. Melody, touched by this kind gesture, hugs Ash out of gratitude. Since obtaining her Squirtle, Ash became Melody's mentor and would teach her all she needs to know about being a Pokémon trainer while help her develop her skills in battles.
