When Ash first met King Triton, he wasn't terribly friendly towards him. However, when he learned from Sebastian that he has an intense grudge on humans due to pirates murdering Queen Athena on the day of their anniversary, he becomes worried about what he was gonna do if he discovered the truth about his identity along with his friends. So, to protect his team from the king's temper tantrums, he kept everyone's human heritage a secret from him and from Ariel during their visits to Atlantica. Soon, Triton eventually began to warm up to Ash during their visits. But things later took a turn for the worse when Sebastian accidently spilled the beans and reveals Ash's secret along with Ariel's rescue of Prince Eric to the sea king, making him enraged. As Triton confronts his daughter as well as Ash's team in the grotto, he cruelly mistreated them by disrespectfully saying that they're just like every human he describes as "spineless, savage, harpooning, fish-eaters, incapable of any feeling!". Those harsh words inadvertently hurt Ash and his team to the core. But after he destroyed the grotto in a fit of anger when Ariel revealed that she loves Prince Eric, he becomes remorseful of his actions and believed that everyone's disappearance as well as his daughter's was his fault. In the climax of the film, when he learns that Ariel's in danger at the hands of Ursula, he reluctantly teams up with Ash's team to help save Ariel, hoping to atone for what he's done in the grotto. However, Ursula bribed the sea king into giving up his kingly status if he wants to save his daughter. With no choice, Triton signed the contract for Ariel's place and was reduced to a polyp, giving up his status as king to Ursula. When Ash learned about what Ursula did to Triton, he becomes enraged and battles her to the death while also giving out a speech about how humans cooperate to keep the planet safe. After Ash defeated and destroyed the wicked sea witch with Prince Eric's help, the evil spells on all her victims were reversed. The spell on King Triton was also reversed and his status as king was restored, permanently nullifying the contract for good. Triton later apologized for his behavior in the grotto and allowed Ariel to follow her heart and marry Prince Eric, much to Ariel's joy. He even allowed Ash and his team to come visit Atlantica as much as they want, much to their joy.
