Ash and Ariel are great friends even though he had a small crush on her. When they first met, Ariel mistook Ash for a merperson and Ash inadvertently lied about his identity. However, when he discovered from Sebastian that her father, King Triton, who is the current sea king and ruler of Atlantica, has an intense grudge on all humanity due to pirates murdering Queen Athena on the day of their anniversary, he becomes worried about what would happen if she and everyone else in the kingdom discovered his identity along with his friends. So, during his visits, he and his friends kept their human heritages a secret from the sea king and from Ariel. Soon, Ariel became fascinated with the human world and longed to become a part of it, Ash felt torn between keeping his secret from Ariel and telling the truth. After she rescued Prince Eric from drowning during a storm and started falling in love with him, he becomes more uncomfortable in telling the truth than before. But when Sebastian accidently spilled the beans about Ariel's rescue of Prince Eric and Ash's human heritage that led to King Triton destroying his daughter's human treasures in barbaric rage, Ariel becomes devastated while Ash felt remorseful for hurting her feelings and breaking her trust along with her father's. Ash was later horrified when Ariel made a life-threatening deal to one of his most dangerous and powerful enemies he's ever faced in his life, Ursula, after she traded her voice in order to gain legs to be with Prince Eric. To atone for his misdeeds and reearn Ariel and King Triton's trust, Ash went through great lengths to help Ariel win Prince Eric's heart and protect her from Ursula throughout the course of the movie. In the end, after Ursula's defeat, Ariel forgave Ash for what he did, knowing why he lied to her that he and his friends are from another world. Ariel told Ash that she loves him as a brother. After being married to Prince Eric and given birth to a daughter named Melody, Ariel became more of a second mother to Ash Ketchum, but when Grimhilde returns as a ghost, Ariel was possessed by her. Ash feels a sense of guilt for putting herself in danger, but with the help of his Friends, the Rebels, the Power Rangers and the Ghostbusters, they managed to put their stalker in her place.
