Stoick first met Ash in ''Pooh's Adventures of How to Train Your Dragon'', where he originally disapproved of him and his friends when they first arrived on Berk. After Ash, Pikachu, and Toothless helped save him, his tribe, and Hiccup from the Red Death he accepted Ash as an honorary son of his. When Stoick sacrificed his life in order to save him, Hiccup, and Pikachu from the brainwashed Toothless' attack (under Drago and his Bewilderbeast's orders), Ash mourned for his loss just like Hiccup, but he wouldn't be angry at Toothless for it, knowing it wasn't his fault. Ash would often remember Stoick's inspiring quote about love that he would keep in mind to share with any of his friends or allies who would mourn over their lost loved ones as well in order to comfort them.
